3 Common Heat Pump Repairs in the Heating Season

Heat pumps are very reliable and durable systems, but they do run year-round, so at some point is it highly likely your heat pump will need repair. Heat pumps have some different repair needs as they do not operate like a traditional combustion heating system, so it’s important to understand what some of these repairs may be. Heat pumps are complex devices, so any needed repairs for your heat pump should be performed only by trained experts. AAction Air offers comprehensive heating services in Savannah so if you are experiencing problems with your heat pump, call us today!

Repair Type 1: Refrigerant Leaks

The refrigerant in your heat pump system facilitates the transfer of heat. Every heat pump is made to operate with an exact amount of refrigerant in order to operate properly and efficiently. When a refrigerant leak develops in your system, it throws the heat release/cooling process off balance, creating issues that can affect your entire system. Refrigerant leaks can be hard to find, and handling refrigerant requires certification. As such, it is important to have a trained technician handle all refrigerant leak repairs with your heat pump.

Repair Type 2: Compressor Issues

The compressor in your heat pump system compresses the refrigerant. Some common problems that can develop with compressors are motor issues, “slugging”, which is when liquid refrigerant enters the compressor, and overheating. Occasionally a compressor can malfunction in such a way that too much pressure is created inside the unit. The telltale sign of this problem is a screaming or screeching sound. This can be a potentially dangerous situation, so if you hear this noise come from your compressor, turn the system off immediately and call for a technician.

Repair Type 3: Electrical Issues

Your heat pump is an electro-mechanical device, requiring a constant and consistent flow of electricity in order to operate. Common electrical problems with a heat pump system can range from faulty breakers to frayed and/or corroded wiring. If your heat pump is operational but you are hearing a loud buzzing or humming sound, this can be indicative of an electrical issue.

Heat pumps work twice as hard as other whole-home systems simply because they have to work throughout the year. Taking care of your heat pump by calling for needed repair and scheduling maintenance can go a long way toward maintaining the system and keeping you comfortable.

If you are having issues with your heat pump, call AAction Air today and schedule an appointment with one of our NATE-certified technicians.
