4 End of the Summer AC Tips

Fall is right around the corner, which means it’s almost time to cover our air conditioners for a few months until next spring. We know, it’s sad to say goodbye but maybe there are some things you can do to make the goodbye a little bit easier.

By no means should your air conditioner just be forgotten about as the months go on. On the contrary, best practices should still be habits you take part in even as the temperatures get cooler. Remember that neglect is going to bring about expensive AC repair in Savannah, GA, so you’re better off avoiding that.

Here are five tips that we’ve come up with that are proven to keep your AC in good shape as we go into the fall. When setting your system up for success like this, you’ll be pleasantly surprised when it works just fine next spring.

Take Good Care of Your AC

The end of August doesn’t always mean the end of hot temperatures. Especially here in Savannah, temperatures will remain pretty hot for another couple of months—so it’s important to take good care of it now. Let’s get into some of the ways you can take care of your air conditioner as you begin to use it less and less. The closer you follow these tips, the better off you’ll be next spring when you take it back out for heavy use!

1. Clean Around the System

A clean air conditioner is less likely to develop a problem from the precipitation we get here during our Savannah winters. Precipitation can lead to water, dirt, sticks, pebbles, and critters getting stuck in your air conditioner. This means that by the time you’re ready to pull it out next spring and enjoy the cool air, you might run into some trouble caused by a season’s worth of debris. When you keep your AC clean and clear out about 2 feet of space around it, it’ll definitely remain in better shape.

2. Have the System Maintained

Fall is the perfect time to have your HVAC systems maintained. You can have your air conditioner maintained as well as your heating system. If you’re an owner of a ductless mini split or a heat pump, then you’ll need to have maintenance done on the system twice a year, and fall is the perfect time to knock off one of those visits.

Maintenance keeps your air conditioner working longer and more efficiently. It’s also a useful tool in locating any major repair needs that your system might have to get addressed.

3. Take Care of Last Minute Repairs

If there’s a repair that needs to be made on your air conditioner, it won’t magically be fixed over the winter. In fact, it’s easy to forget about repair needs during the winter. You might get surprised when you go to turn on your air conditioner next summer, only for it to make a noise and break down because a repair was never made.

4. Replace the Air Filter

The air filter isn’t going to replace itself, and getting a head start on this necessary aspect of owning an air conditioner can be vital. When you pull your system out next year, you’ll be thanking us that you listened to this advice!
