Could Changing the Air Filter Help Fix Your AC?

It’s possible! Your air conditioner has a number of parts—some of which use electricity and motors, some of which help refrigerant on its path through the system, and some of which stay still and don’t seem to contribute much at all. Of course, this just isn’t true: every component of your air conditioner is important including the air filter.

The air filter may be a part that sits stagnant in the return register of your duct system, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t do anything for your air conditioner. Without it, your air conditioner is vulnerable to damage from debris in your air, and poor air quality. With a dirty one, though, airflow is blocked into the system, which can really mess up parts of your AC.

These are the types of AC repair issues that might potentially be caused by a dirty filter.

  • Low Airflow – Some rooms seem warmer or cooler than others, or else your entire home is not getting the right amount of air from the vents.
  • High Temperatures – The air conditioner cannot seem to stay with the thermostat settings.
  • Failing Parts – Other components of the AC get overworked by the lack of air.
  • Increasing Bills – Your energy costs seem to keep going up and up.

Of course, you may need a technician to diagnose some other issue in the system, but a dirty filter could be responsible for any one of these issues, and replacing it could help solve the problem.

On the other hand, it might be too late.

Your AC system was designed to have a certain amount of air moving into the system and moving out through the ducts as it is running. In fact, it was sized just for the space in your home when it was installed.

When anything changes to affect the normal cooling load, the air conditioner can suffer. With a lack of airflow, the motors work harder, refrigerant pumps for longer, and all of the parts may wear down attempting to cool your home.

Eventually, you might have to replace the air filter and call in a professional.
