Do Geothermal Systems Work in the Summer?

When homeowners hear the word geothermal, they often think of heat. Obviously, this makes sense as the word thermal is right there in the name! And indeed, geothermal heat pumps are an excellent way to keep your home warm all winter long. But, what about the summer?

Geothermal heat pumps, like all heat pumps, offer cooling as well! So, if you are currently in the market for a new way to keep your home cool this summer, don’t count out geothermal systems as an option! Below, we will explain how geothermal systems work and some of the reasons why you should consider installing this type of system. Keep reading to find out more!

How Geothermal Systems Work in the Summer

The indoor components of a geothermal heat pump are similar to those of a standard air-source heat pump — a refrigerant coil where the refrigerant is either condensed or evaporated and a blower fan to send the heated/cooled air into the ventilation system. But where an air-source heat pump uses an outdoor coil to perform heat exchange, a geothermal heat pump uses loops buried under the ground.

These loops are buried about 6 to 10 feet down into the ground in order to access more stable temperatures. When the heat pump is in cooling mode, the refrigerant absorbs heat from inside your home and then transfers that heat into a water/anti-freeze mixture moving through the loops. This heat is then deposited into the ground, using it as a heat sink. The removal of heat from your home is what makes it feel cool!

Are There Advantages to Using a Geothermal Cooling?

Why, yes! There are plenty of benefits of using a geothermal system to keep your home cool!

Many homeowners worry about the cost of installing one of these systems, but we can tell you, installing a geothermal system is definitely a worthwhile investment. What sets geothermal systems apart from other types of heat pumps and air conditioners is their energy efficiency and reliability. In fact, a geothermal heat pump works at 3 to 6 times greater energy efficiency than a standard air-source model. Plus, the relatively stable temperature of the Earth means that the heat pump has a reliable source for heating and cooling, making the system quite dependable.

Lastly, heat pumps do not require the burning of a fuel source to provide you with comfort, making them very environmentally-friendly! The ground is a free source of heat, so why not use it?
