You can feel air coming out of the vents in your living room. You know that the air conditioner is running and that it’s at least trying to cool down your home. The air coming out of the vents might not be hot—just not quite cool enough.
When this happens, every homeowner’s worst fear is that the air conditioner has actually broken down for good. The warm temperatures are a sign of an air conditioner that has finally lived out its life and there’s no way to fix it (or else, fixing it will cost almost as much as replacing it). We have one important piece of advice:
Call a technician!
There’s always the chance that your air conditioner can be salvaged, and the sooner you call, the better.
Is It Possible to Repair It?
If repairs are possible, you must call a technician sooner rather than later. The longer you wait to schedule repairs, the worse the problem can get, as some of the other parts start to fall into a state of disrepair as well, from becoming overworked. It’s possible that you just have:
- Low refrigerant levels.
- A motor that’s burning out.
- A problematic capacitor.
- A dirty outside coil.
In fact, it might just be that your air filter is too dirty!
Do You Need to Replace It?
Of course, at some point in time, you will need to replace the unit. If a technician tells you it must be replaced, you can get a second opinion from another company. But all in all, you’ll want to replace it if:
- It’s sized improperly, something that cannot be simply fixed.
- It can be repaired, but only for upwards of $500, and with a part mismatched with the original system.
- It’s over 10-15 years old and operating inefficiently, something it may be unable to bounce back from as it nears the end of its life.
