Are Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems Noisy?

ductless-living-room-air-handlerHave you heard about the whole-house capabilities of ductless heating and cooling systems? Ductless systems are a great way to bring air conditioning and heating into a home that wasn’t designed for a central air unit.

Of course, there are several heating and AC systems you can use instead of a central unit, many of which you can find in retail stores. Window units and room air conditioners are common in our area, but there are many complaints to be made about these units.

Often, single-room cooling solutions can be rather noisy. So when we tell homeowners about ductless air conditioning and heating systems, we often get asked about the noise level.

Luckily, ductless heating and cooling systems are not any louder than a standard central AC unit. We tell you why in the guide below, and let you know why this may be your best option for comfort and efficiency.

What Makes Other Systems Noisy

Central air units are called split-system air conditioners (or heat pumps). A split system air conditioner has an outdoor unit and a central indoor unit. The compressor—the part with the loudest motor—and the large outdoor fan are kept outside and out of sight. But window and room air conditioners, common AC solutions for our area, have all of the components in a single unit. That means the noise is amplified by all of the components in your system sitting right in your windowsill.

Ductless Systems Are a Lot Quieter

A ductless heating and cooling system is set up a lot differently. It actually has an outdoor unit, just like a conventional split-system. Part of the unit sits outdoors, and a refrigerant line leads to the indoor blower units. These units blow air directly into the room or zone they are in. The loudest components are contained outdoors.

In other words, all you hear is the fan—just like you would with a conventional central air unit (unless you’re standing outdoors). A ductless heat pump is the closest you can get to a conventional split-system air conditioner (or heat pump) without renovating your home, and that’s another reason to go ductless.

Other Reasons to Switch to Ductless Heating and Cooling

Ductless air conditioning and heating units are known for much more than their low noise levels.

  • High Efficiency Ratings – Ductless heating and cooling systems are more efficient than portable heaters or window AC units. Those types of systems are not even held up to the same efficiency standards as conventional central air units because it is difficult to manufacture them to use little energy. However, ductless systems are comparable to the most efficient central AC systems.
  • Heating and Cooling – Ductless systems provide heating and cooling in one because they are heat pumps. Heat pumps move heat from place to place, a more efficient process than other electric heat producing systems.
  • No Renovations – You can have up to 4 indoor units controlled by the same thermostat in most setups. That means whole-house heating and cooling without major renovations to your house.
