Repair vs. Replacement: What’s Right for My AC?

You know that your air conditioning system is in trouble, but you’re not sure how severe the problem has gotten. Temperatures don’t appear to be quite right, and you might notice problems with startup or shorter runtimes than usual. But does this mean you need to replace your system? And how can you know for sure?

When Replacement Is the Right Choice for an Older System

Eventually, any air conditioning system will need replacement. But don’t despair. Replacing a ten year-old (or older) system with a brand new unit means better efficiency and comfort (if it’s properly installed).

Here’s how you can tell your system may be in need of a replacement:

  • A technician tells you that repairing the system will cost around half of what a new system would cost.
  • You tend to make many repairs in a year.
  • Your system is over 10-15 years old and it no longer runs efficiently or operates smoothly.

A Special Circumstance for Newer Systems

Unfortunately, even newer systems can need replacement sooner than you might expect. This could be due to a problem with manufacturing, but it might also be because your air conditioner was not properly installed.

If your system is the wrong size for your home, it won’t work as planned. An air conditioning system that is too large may short-cycle, while one that is too small won’t cool the home effectively. Both scenarios cause a system to struggle, cost a lot to run, and, potentially, fail too early on.

You May Want a Second Opinion

Of course, there are plenty of circumstances under which repair is still the better of the two options. Replacing the system is not cost effective if a repair could keep the system running for another year or two and if it doesn’t cost too much to have done.

Remember that it’s okay to seek out a second opinion if you’re not sure about the diagnosis. Sometimes, all you need is to change out a small electrical component or replace a motor that is relatively inexpensive (compared to a new system!).

Make sure you find technicians you can trust. Check online reviews, ask for credentials, and only work with certified, trained people for your AC repair or replacement.
