Saving money around the holidays can be difficult when you’re traveling, and when the spirit of the season is uniquely focused on giving to loved ones and those in need. Save money around the house without skimping on the presents with a few of our favorite holiday tips for the home.
Keep the Home Maintained
Keeping your home well-maintained can help you to prevent disasters from coming up during a holiday gathering. As a team of HVAC specialists, we emphasize the importance of changing filters and scheduling professional maintenance services for your heating and cooling equipment, so that it does not break down when you need it the most.
Don’t Overuse the Thermostat
During holiday parties and family gatherings, your thermostat might get a lot of use, with family members raising and lowering the thermostat as they see fit. Try to limit thermostat usage, and try locking the thermostat so you are the only one with control (available on many smart thermostats).
If you are going on vacation, make sure you understand the thermostat settings and programming to maximize efficiency while you are away. You might consider a smart thermostat if you want to check on the home’s temperature on your trip directly from your smart phone.
Put Your Lights on a Timer
If you’ve got an outdoor light display, it can use more energy than you realize. Make sure you do not overuse your lights by plugging lights into a timer, available at many hardware and department stores, and then into an outlet. Set the timer to start when it gets dark, but shut off at a reasonable hour, when people are no longer out to see your light display.
While we’re at it, make sure you are using LED lighting for the inside and outside of your home. Even if it is a bigger investment, the savings can be huge. It may be time to throw out older string lights that do not use LED lighting.
