Tips for Maintaining New Heating and AC Equipment

When you spend money on a new HVAC system (such as a furnace or central air conditioner), you may assume that it will run smoothly for the first few years without much trouble. But any air conditioning or heating system, even a brand new high-efficiency one, can run into trouble if a homeowner fails to care for it. Learn more about maintaining a brand new furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump in today’s guide.

Tip #1: Even new units need professional maintenance!

It’s a common misconception that routine maintenance visits are only important for older heating and cooling systems. In truth, routine maintenance benefits every system, as even a little bit of dirt can interfere with the efficiency and performance of a mechanical system. In fact, sometimes a manufacturer’s warranty is void if the homeowner does not schedule annual maintenance visits. Schedule a tune up twice a year with a professional technician, or join a maintenance plan so that you don’t have to worry about it.

Tip #2: Learn how to use your programmable thermostat

If you still have an old outdated manual thermostat, we always recommend upgrading it to a programmable model when you purchase and install your new unit. But a programmable thermostat is useless if you don’t know how to program it efficiently. Choose a temperature setting in cool weather that is high enough for comfort but low enough to be comfortable (we recommend 68°F). When using your air conditioner, find an efficient temperature everyone can agree with (like 78°F). Program the thermostat to automatically change the temperature by 10° when you are not home or while you are asleep. Ask a technician for help understanding the controls.

Tip #3: Keep it clean

Any major cleaning jobs, such as those that require chemicals or any task that requires you to disassemble a piece of equipment, should go to a professional HVAC contractor. However, you can focus on cleaning the area around the unit, and making sure to change the air filter every single month.
