Why Your Heater Keeps Shutting Down Prematurely

Your heating system seems to be running fine: it comes on when it should, without making any strange noises, and starts providing you heat. But there’s one problem… it keeps shutting off too early, before it can reach the temperature set on the thermostat.

This problem is known as short cycling, and it’s a malfunction that we see often in heaters. It usually requires repairs, or sometimes a new installation. When it comes to heating Hilton Head, SC, AAction Air is a trusted name for quality; call us if you start to encounter “short cycling.”

There are a number of different reasons for premature shutdown of your heater. From our experience, these are the two most common:

An improperly sized heater

If your heater is too large for your home, it will raise the temperature rapidly and reach its target temperature too fast, shutting itself off before it can complete its cycle. This can turn into a serious problem since it will 1) drain extra power each time it has to turn back on, and 2) wear down faster, leading to more repairs and potentially an early replacement. Check with a professional HVAC technician to see if your heater is the wrong size.

An incorrectly calibrated thermostat

It’s easy to overlook the thermostat as the source of a problem, but it often is. The thermostat switches the heater off when it senses that it has met its temperature goal. But if the thermostat has become miscalibrated so it senses the temperature incorrectly, it may shut the heater off before it reaches its target. This is usually an easy fix for technicians.

Whatever has caused your heater to short cycle, it is an issue that needs remedy as soon as you can arrange it. If the heater continues to malfunction this way, it will lead to uneven heating and cause the system to age rapidly. Have an expert inspect your heater and find out what is wrong.

AAction Air has NATE-certified technicians on staff to provide you with a knowledgeable assessment of your heater’s needs. We offer customer service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so help is always available for your heating in Hilton Head, SC.
