Benefits of Using an Air Filter in Your Home

Air filters are a great way to help remove pollutants from the air circulating through your home. They are good at removing particles such as dust, pollen and animal dander from the air. Air conditioning and heating systems have built in air filters, but the addition of in–duct filters can make a big difference in improving and maintaining your indoor air quality levels. To learn more about the installation of mechanical air filters in your ductwork, call AAction Air Conditioning & Heating Co. today.

How is the Efficiency of Mechanical Air Filters Measured?

Air filter efficiency is measured with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating. This scale ranges from 1–20, with one being the lowest efficiency and 20 being the highest. The higher, the MERV rating, the better filtration effectiveness you’ll receive. Of course, the higher the rating the more airflow resistance you system will face, so you should have a professional assist you with the air filter installation process to ensure that you are getting right filter for your personal heating and cooling system.

Types of Air Filters

There are a few different types of in–duct air filters to choose from. Flat or Panel air filters are common in residential furnaces and air conditioning systems, featuring a MERV of 1–4. These filters do an efficient job of protecting components of your comfort system from debris, but are not really meant to boost the indoor air quality in your home. Small airborne air particles can generally pass through them, though they are moderately efficient at removing larger particles from the air. Pleated or extended surface filters are more efficient overall, with a MERV of 5–13, and those with a MERV of 7–13 are likely to be as effective at particle remove as high end HEPA filters. At the top of the scale are high efficiency filters with a MERV of 14–16 and actual HEPA filters with a MERV of 17–20. Most residential air conditioning systems and ductwork would not be able to accommodate filters with a HEPA this high because of the increased airflow resistance they produce.
